The following walk is a change from the walk scheduled on the first version of the programme
Sunday 25th August – An Ascent of Pontesford Hill & Earl’s Hill
Starting point: Please meet the leader, Gill, at 10 am at the Earl’s Hill Nature Reserve off the narrow lane to Pontesford Hill.
Grid Ref: SJ408057 Post Code: SY5 0UH W3W: shaky.rationing.hilltop
Directions: One route from Bridgnorth Is the A458 towards Shrewsbury. Take the A5 westward then the A488 towards Pontesbury. At Pontesford, look out for the Nature Reserve sign near the Wynnstay County Store and turn on to a narrow lane. The Earl’s Hill Nature Reserve Car Park is approx. 600 m along this lane.
The walk: We follow the track around the fort before ascending steeply up Pontesford Hill and Earl’s Hill. The views are well worth the climb. Earl’s Hill is an Iron Age Hill Fort about 60BC and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of the wildlife value. When descending it is worth stopping to admire the wonderful scenery. The last section is steep but short. We continue towards Habberley via Lower Farm, followed by a short section on the road through Habberley before taking a footpath to Upper Vessons Farm and up to Lordshill. From here we follow the path through Maddox Coppice, descend gently through Poles Coppice to Polesgate before taking the footpaths back towards Earl’s Hill. We skirt the edge of Pontesbury Hill eventually descending via the fort to the parking area. You can follow the route on OS Exp 241 and 216.
Distance: 8.5 miles (13.6 km) Total Ascent: 1,740 ft (530 m) Grade: top of B
Please contact Gill Steed to let her know if you are coming on the walk.
There are no longer any legal restrictions on us due to COVID-19. However, we are encouraged to continue to take sensible precautions. We request that you:
